City service proposal: Bank #6223

Bank provides a special kind of chest or NPC service that allows player to access inventory space shared with all banks.

This kind of inventory would fill the gap between player inventory/bags ("always on me") and player's home ("only there"), allowing players to have some special stuff somewhat closer to them without requiring a "dedicated" inventory space in their "expedition" setup. It would also ease up time for newbies, who would no longer require a plot or base to store small amount of things.

It should be discussed if placing those in player's home bases should be permitted (I'm slightly in favour of allowing so in protected areas, since... Duchies), and how large the bank inventory should be (I'd suggest 6×8 = 48 spaces = 1.5 of a chest).

Acceptance criteria would be among the lines of "safely looking building with a vault, bank teller window and perhaps few private offices for important clients".

So basically it's an ender chest but as a city service?

Seems so, or like a bank in WoW or such

What advantage would have bank service over city simply putting an ender chest at some appropriate location(s)?

I like the bank/treasure vault city service approach. There once was a plan to add an ender chest as a city service, but demanding a vault of sorts with sturdy walls is a much better idea.

I'll add this to the city service poster.

While the inventory slots is up to balancing (and may depend on the level of the city service), I don't want to demand specific construction. Ofc there must be a way to place the chest and a way to reach it, the rest is up to voters.

I was at first confused - a bank is to store currency - and we hardly have that.

But the idea of having a special chest with shared inventory between all cities is a really nice one. And that even fits to the medieval theme (having a storage for valuables instead of just a bank account).

Levels of city services are good as such. I just do wonder how to handle diffrent levels in this case? Say you go to bank A with a very high level. Then you visit bank B with a low level. Now only part of your inventory would be accessible? That doesn't make too much sense and is a bit confusing.

If so, then perhaps add diffrent...pages...to the chest? Say, level 1 is one chest inventory. Level 2 gives a second chest inventory etc. The chest from my traders mod has such a page system.

Further idea: It seems odd when everyone is allowed to take things out of the main chest that stores all the valuables of the bank. Instead, the NPC might present the player with the formspec for accessing his bank account inventory directly. That can be done via custom actions (displaying a custom formspec).

Might also be intresting for an official post office building. Trouble there is that the post office master needs to know who owns which mailbox. He might at least drop things into the right mailbox without the player having to search through row after row. The players would then still need to go to their mailbox to take their mail out.

For a world that gives you a hat when you try to build a boat upside-down - close enough.

In WoW, players talk to a bank teller to access their personal storage. Guild vault is accessed through vault itself, though. In The Witcher 2, Geralt talks to an innkeep to access his storage, or can interact with his chest directly (true, it's a single player game). TW1 goes with innkeep and TW3 with chest, so on average any solution seems fine.

I second the post office master NPC idea, that would be pretty neat!

I love this city service. It makes the cities seem more authentic and gives newbies a better way of storage. How about adding the ability to get interest when you store gold inside?

Only if we also add a chance that all your items are wiped.

Read: No.

What about the bank providing exchange, i.e exchanging goods provided by players with prices set by them in a stockmarket style?

Rather no, we don't want to replace smartshops.
