Swimming in lava seems to be a lot slower now - more like swimming through mime glue. Minetest13 and Lupercus were also able to notice a major difference.
probably due to #4596, i'll do some tests to see exactly how much slower it is
IRL lava is pretty thick though... and not even thickness, you probably won't be able to really dive into it, since buoyancy will keep you mostly out of it :)
Wasn't there an issue where we note things we intend to break? Among those are making swimming slower and swimming in lava much slower, also damage-ticking a protective armour in lava.
Currently fire-resisting armour allows extensive dives. I'd rather have people protected from falling in and getting out ASAP instead.
the speed decrease seems to be consistent w/ movement in other mediums.
I am very very certain the normal speed isn't that low. I remember it used to be like swimming in water.
it's possible it was higher with some earlier version of minetest, i know fluid mechanics were reworked with minetest 5.0, they could have been tweaked again recently. but those are empirical values i tested w/ a vanilla mod set.
Yes, lava swim is slower for me too. I remember i could swim faster than other player in lava - maybe also depends on client version?
BUT werewolfs can still swim fast in lava! 🙂
closing this. lava swim speed has been different than water swim speed since i started playing minetest - 0.4.17 (or maybe 0.4.16?). empirically it's currently not that much slower than before #4596. it doesn't seem different to me and i spent quite a lot of time swimming in lava in the nether years ago when i didn't care as much about losing XP from death.
