If a player reaches a certain coordinate, an NPC should be able to appear to communicate the next task. At the location of this first task, the same NPC should reappear and set another task, etc.
I had only contacted the NPCs because @Sokomine had asked what other players think an NPC should do to create good quests. From my point of view, the issues #3490 (craftable looks like NPCs), #4695 (NPCs can sit, lay and do animations) and #5178 (images inside of the text) would be very important.
And because yesterday I myself had to explain to Sokomine my wish expressed here again, I want to do it again in more detail here.
So far, NPCs have mostly been involved in quests by approaching a highly visible NPC 1, then talking to him and then being given a task. This task could be, for example: Go to NPC 2 and talk to him / get an item / give him an item. So you go to NPC 2, which is visible from afar, and do your job. Then you go back to NPC 1 and the task is done. For example, you get a solution word / item/ another clue to the quest.
But I would like to come to a place from which I received the coordinates, for example in a book. There, however, the NPC only appears when I either stand within a certain radius / pick up an item (to illustrate it, let's call the item a magic lamp) / place something. Only then does the NPC appear. It doesn't matter whether he suddenly teleports or appears from a fog with a ploff / a door opens. Only, he shouldn't have stood around somewhere forever before. Who is standing around somewhere 27/7? Poor NPCs.
Now the player can talk to the NPC as usual. Once the task has become clear and the player says goodbye, the NPC also disappears again. The player embarks on the path to complete the task. It would be especially great if there was a time limit that can be entered when creating the quest. Let's say: arrive at location xyz in three MT days and nights at the latest. If the player reaches the right place in time, exactly this NPC appears again (ok in more detailed quests, of course, it can also be a second or third NPC) and says: "Player, you have taken the first hurdle, take the second task here."
And in this way, the NPC is supposed to accompany the player, so to speak. No, it's not supposed to run there. He should not have to find a way. That's why he will never get hung anywhere and get stuck. It should simply appear and disappear from time to time.
I hope it has become clearer now.
