Somehow it takes me more than a single piece of mulch. Same goes for bonemeals and fertilizer.

Also, you can keep on fertilizering farming crops even when they're in their final stage and also when you click on the ground, it takes one fertilizer per click. If you hit grass with it, the stack decreases, but the environment doesn't change.

that's the intended behavior now w/ the update.
