Let's say you die in a place where enemy mobs are active and going to that same spot via portal will get you killed again unless, you are teleported few feet away and once the danger is clear you can navigate with death compass and then collect your bones (with items).
pretty sure the death compass as implemented by facedeer has already been discussed and panned, but there's certainly at least one "active" proposals about similar mechanics:
