i'm not sure all doors should operate via mesecons signals, but players get confused when some doors do and some doors don't without any sort of apparent reason.

Logically you want a hidden door to be closed when it is not in use, so it remains hidden. There's not a good way to do this if it is not responding to mesecons (as default doors do via pressure plates in example).
