AspireMint reports a bug:

[Fern] When you take Fern out of flowerpot, you will get fern_1/2/3 which is not stackable with fern. You have to place it somewhere and dig it to get fern.

i placed a fern in a flower pot 90 minutes ago, and noticed it showed up as flowerpot:default_fern_2, which definitely seemed odd to me. didn't get as far as digging it up though.

fix could be either having only 1 potted fern, or having it drop the right item when it is broken.

might be true of other things too (can you put grass in a flowerpot?)

also, if multiple-variant flowerpots survive this fix, you should also be able to use the shears to cycle them per #1218.

alias, what's your preference? none of the possible solutions i see are difficult.

I tried to get different ones, but they all looked the same in the flowerpot?

default:fern is the one w/ variants.

from left-to-right, fern_1, fern_2, fern_3. fern_1 and fern_3 appear to be the same size in the flowerpot, however, if you look closely, fern_3 is noticably higher-resolution. fern_2 appears smaller.

solution here would probably be to check the drop table when removing the "flower" part.
