i support some sort of feature like this.
This issue is a generalization of #1252
Sounds like an interesting idea.
May conflict later with the planned repair mechanics.
adding some keywords here to make this easier to search for:
smelting smelt recycle recycling uncraft uncrafting decraft decrafting
I don't if this is exactly what people want but I found this mod
Decraft
De-craft items with the decrafting workbench.
https://content.minetest.net/packages/cool_beans/decraft/?protocol_version=41
i don't think we want a generic un-crafting mechanism. also, i'm wondering about how that would ever work for items w/ multiple recipes, or whose recipes use groups.
But may be a melting furnace to get back all metals?
Sounds good and logical. Metals can easily be reclaimed, while getting wood back from a used tool (or even paper) is likely to fail. Also seperating a baked bread back into its indigrents may be...intresting, to say the least :-)
Still, even that will need some balancing. Nether ingots could then be obtained from tools, which are more frequent than the ingots needed for armor? I wouldn't mind if players could get nether armor with more reasonable effort.
Diffrent repair mechanisms will require a re-balancing of all tools and armor anyway...
That causes nether ingots to become much less valuable.
Also, for items having multiple recipes, how is the un-crafter supposed to work? Wouldn't it make wacky and unbalanced things possible, such as being able to create sherlocks with a mese crystal?
it's been proposed and turned down several times. we aren't doing that.
this issue isn't about the uncrafter, it's about smelting metal tools to reclaim (some) of the materials that were used to craft them. i didn't mean to imply that this should be closed, though perhaps it can be. it's been years.
reopening the discussion about smelting tools to regain some of the metal used to craft them
