Here's an idea for a mob (floated it in the Unoffical Minetest modding channel too) - make a mob that burrows into sand. Either it clips in and out of the sand, or it actually displaces sand blocks as it moves along.

Like a hermit crab, or a sandworm from Dune, or the creatures from Tremors.
