Thats normal behaviour for minetest and petz, so not a bug or balancing.
If no player is around the mapblock is "paused", same reason why furnaces stop working if nobody is near.
It´s possible to avoid that by using timestamps but that would require rewriting alot of code. In this case mobkit, mokapi and petz(all animals not just sheeps).
I think the label "result/wontfix" and maybe "source/upstream" and closing it fits here.
Thank you very much for the explanation! I checked back with Alias - we discussed some options how to proceed and finally came to the conclusion that we better leave this as it is right now. Every other option would indeed require a lot of work, either upstream or by us.
This is rather a documentation issue then. I will write Leni that this mechanic is not a bug but a safeguard so that your animals don't get born, grow up and die while you are offline for a couple of days.
The reporting player got mail from me! Closing the issue.
