MineWorlds reports a bug:

strange durability bug 2: if you hit an protected mobs_redo mob (e.g an miocene for example.) with an sword, nothing will happen and your sword is untouched, but when you use an balrog whip however, nothing will happen, but the whip's durability lowers down as if the whip had dealt damage, and if you go over to an npc and hit them, no matter what weapon, you will lose durability, and when you go over to protected petz mobs. the same results happen as mobs_redo

An easy solution would be don't hit things you shouldn't hit or you will be repairing your weapon?
