Water and other fluids in minetest work very differently than in the real world and are often used not the way one expects.

  • Swimming is faster than boating.
  • Swimming is just as fast as walking
  • Jumping across the water
  • Water elevator
  • Water from a single source can flood vast areas
  • lava VS water fighting causes lag on the rollback manager

More like kind/balancing :p
Counterpoint: this is a game.

  • forcing people to use boats and build bridges because swimming is slow (and dangerous because of sharks) - this could make the game more interesting, or more annoying, it depends.
  • water elevators - nice game mechanic, but alright, we have rope blocks instead - idk if there's a way to just limit vertical water spread through mods (similar to how it works horizontally?) - would look weird, but could work.
  • rollback issues would become less of a problem with limited vertical water/lava spread?

(also, if swimming becomes slow, I predict the amount of ocean-spanning bridges will increase...)

Maybe instead of slowing down swimming speed, increase boat speed?
Also, we can add more hostile creatures to the sea, such as sharks or sea monsters.

As for what whosit said, if we were to limit the vertical spread of water, maybe we can make the water source itself flow down instead of spawning flowing water below it if it reaches the limit.

Transport

  • using boats would be more roleplay, so I think that would be good. if boats can made faster that would be an incentive to use them
  • In explored areas could be harbors with ferrys that allow to cross the oceans. That could be an incentive for people who would like to build a harbor but don't (want to) have a city to do so. Also more harbors could be another place for quests.
    Flooding
  • some flooding in mines could be taken as a normal issue. There is water underground in RL and it does flood mines (see your-land/reports#1240 (comment))
  • as long as water (and lava) sources are infinite it's coherent that they flood big areas below unless we change the range it expands, so it could be reduced from 5 to 3 blocks. But that also would have effects on the overground world

What I really miss here is that you can rinse / collect items with water. Yes, I know that would be a basis for many very exciting machines and I haven't heard a convincing argument so far why that would be so negative for the game.
