better explanation: you have a water bucket in a recipe, maybe allow a water source to be used instead? same with river water buckets and sources ...

there's a lot of requests we've evaluated for specific recipes w.r.t. this mechanic, but we haven't established a general principle. i'm in favor of this (and also stacking buckets and making bucket "tools" dig water sources like pickaxes dig stone). but i don't think alias agrees.
