So what?
"Unknown node" can mean that some mod is broken or failed to load, so it confuses people...
so a dupe of #4294
however, alias wants to delete all items that players shouldn't get
It's nothing urgent, only "maintenance". I don't want any unknown blocks or entitites in the game.
There are several aspects to this:
First of all, why does the player have a problem with my plot and not try to solve it with me? No one likes this kind of behavior in real life. Then we shouldn't encourage it in the game either.
@flux
Of course, Alias is indisputably the boss. And if the boss says it has to be that way, then it should be that way (because I trust Alias that this is for the benefit of all of us and by no means arbitrary). But it's not about trying to guess what Alias wants. Well, I have the advantage of having read a lot about it, but newbies can't and shouldn't have to think about it.
To put it simply, in my country, what is not prohibited is allowed. This may be different in other countries. In this case, however, I insist on that principle. It should apply worldwide. Well, Alias would like to keep this one rule and keep the rule book simple. However, I can't derive the case described above from the one rule. Therefore, it would be better if there is a clear announcement about "Air" and "Unknown" that you can read.
@AliasAlreadyTaken
Ok, this is clear now. But another principle in my country is that everyone is equal before the law. Someone who reads the bug tracker should not be treated differently than someone who doesn't. Therefore, this sentence should be included in the server rules so that it is readable and applies to all players in the game.
someone once explained to me that under napoleonic law, what was not prohibited was compulsory. but that's terrible.
i've also got a lot of removed, ungettable, or impossible items, that i like to keep as souvenirs and occasionally sell as oddities. i've kept such items on every major minetest server i've played on. in my experience, there's no harm to that. but if alias mandates that we destroy them, i won't protest any more than i already have.
The only real issue I see, is that they look like something is broken and people report them, then we must go and investigate...
So maybe compromise will be to ask Boot to not display "unknown item" so prominently? :)
And "air" is fine, no one thinks that one is broken :p
Another suggestion is to have "known unknown item" icons - for stuff that we know people can have, but does not exist anymore.
Idk if it's easy to do, but that at least make it clear that this is not a bug. "forgotten item"?
i'm in favor of that just because this has now been reported twice.
Which ultimately is my fault again: I tell people to report unknown entities, unknown blocks and unknown anything ;)
I know many other servers (and even real games) don't care about glitches, developer items, broken things and some are even rare collectibles or are traded on a tongue-in-cheek black market. Especially since they are useless beyond possession - they can't be used for cheating or other malicious stuff and I don't want to cheat anyone out of their collection of oddities. Sure, we could leave them ingame as trinkets or fun memento that nothing is perfect.
But for me, each of those indicate we have a lapse in the code or a state we didn't think of. Similar to a leftover screw after you reassembled the motor of your car. That's why I'd prefer to get rid of them.
outside of this, i don't disagree. but a leftover screw means you need to take the whole thing apart again, if it's involved in any life-or-death situation, or anything as serious.
