certain death messages don't appear to be normal ie. nazthelizard122 was killed by nazthelizard122, using canned tomato plus, near grayness under.

there's one instance in which you get killed by a fireball while you are swinging your sword, but that's a rarity in and of itself.
otherwise idk how you can trigger it

can reproduce with baked potatos (and everything else):

Take of armor (otherwise it might take ages)
get some craftable snowballs and throw them vertical in the sky.
when they begin to fall down, go to the position where they land and switch the hotbar item (p.ex. to potatos :-)

I'd assume that the mod who is responsible for the death messages simply takes the wielditem from the killer (if there is one). (and snowballs call the on_punch function with the name of the player who threw the snowball)

It also happened once when taonza12 drowned and it says that he drown in "water 12"
