Today I wanted to set up an alt. I had checked the chosen name with /last-login and the answer was: unknown. When I registered, however, I was told that the name was already taken. The name is not server-technical. So how come?

Surprise! Apparently there is no /last-login NAME when the person never logged in. That's what I used when I wanted to know whether the name was already taken.

I changed the password so Boot could take the second account. There's no danger involved, the player never logged in.
