given how difficult the nether is already I see this as a good change especially since there's no reason to go there anyways

This would be similar to balrogs and the overworld which start spawning at -18k and are more common the deeper you go

  1. YL nether isn´t underground so dragons will never spawn at -height, if they do (outside of events) thats a bug
  2. nether starts at +25k height, so once again bug if you encounter dragons below that
  3. dragons are uncommon, increasing their spawnrate makes them more common which is exactly what they shouldnt be
  4. idea behind nether is that it is hard & brutal and suggestions that change that don´t really make sense
  5. a lot of players figured out how to survive in nether so it should even be made harder

Nothing. There's nothing there. It's meant to be used if we add like something additional there.

As for this point, I don't agree with it. The thing is, dragons are meant to be extremely rare, and your suggestions make the nether less brutal and hard and well, that's the point. It IS supposed to be brutal and hard. If you die 10 times when trying to dragon hunt, that's sort of the point.

I was thinking the nether was 64k blocks tall, -32k to +32k (or whatever the exact number is) so since all of the portals are at +29k it would take ages to get down to -20k to hunt dragons

In the current nether I agree, dragons would be too common and the price for scales would dramatically decrease

current max size for a whole minetest world is ca. 62k x 62k x 62k and that contains everything.

different "dimenions" start and end on different heights, for YL nether that is between +25k to 30k.
below and above YL nether are several layers of bedrock to prevent players from digging in/out.
to prevent players from building up there is also a big layer of "thin air" (suffocates you) below YL nether.

About digging down from +29k to -20k, digging through 49k of nether might take a while but there are players on YL that would do that.
No matter what game and what kind of game there always is and will be atleast 1 player that does such stuff just because it is a boundary.

apparently nether portals can appear at any y elevation between 500 and 1500 nodes below the ceiling of the nether (though it tries to find something solid to spawn on so it's not floating in the air), so in our case, between y=29000 and 30000. which checks out empirically @ the public nether portal. wait, i've now found more portal remnants between 28000 and 28200... not sure what those are about.

this does mean that the "lower" regions of the nether are technically more difficult to access than the upper ones. however, given that you can build portals in the nether to get back to the surface world, it's not impossibly inaccessible.
