first off, if you trap one in a box it will escape because it spawns dirt and glitches through the roof or walls
second, no matter the distance from its explosion attack or the blocks or how many of them you will get either hurt or killed (most likely killed)

while it'd be great if the behavior was better, these are mostly intentional features. glitching through walls/roofs isn't intentional, but it's hard to stop. the "spawn dirt" is a core feature of mobs_redo (though i've never seen anything else use it), and was present in hamlet's original balrog. the radius within which players receive damage is twice the radius of the "crater", which was chosen intentionally because creating the crater is relatively computationally expensive.
