MineWorlds reports a bug:

anti-blockplacement bug in public farm: you can "place" balrog's flame on the soil by holding the balrog whip. pointing it at empty soil and right clicking on it.

point the whip at a node and right-click. you've got to be close enough so that the node is "highlighted". the fix seems to be live.
