Sokomine reports a bug:

having to hold down shift while felling a big tree is not always that practical. an oak takes ages. in that time it's not possible to talk (extremly annoying!), fix the axe, defend against hostile mobs. and restarting always requires a new tree trunk somewhere...

use /toggle_choppy to enable on-by-default.

in an update to choppy that i don't think is live yet, the chopping process is only paused if you have to repair the axe or use another tool, instead of being aborted.
