this is by far the most egregious "construction" i've ever seen on the server. the culprit is Horus Damocles. the extent is between (15949, -200ish, -16024) and (17658, 6530, -11974), or approximately 46.6 cubic kilometers if it were a solid rectangular prism.
Home.
my build plan is a few years.
each of the side sections of the tower takes bout a weekend.
#4763 is also just my path north.
been in an isolated area for quite some time.
in another game I built 37 castles 5 days each,
that were 380, so I build quick even for size and time.
the bottom looked not bad for what my view range from ground allowed, but I had no idea this is so large, I saw only small part apparently. How is that possible to build 6.5 km high construction without digtron or similar assistive machinery?
cf. #3805
@Horus the issue isn't the amount of time it will take, the main issue is that it's "flying", even though it's nominally supported by connection to the ground. however, it's quite remote from other builds, and also so far up in the sky that other players aren't likely to notice.
the unsupported bridges closer to ground are harder to ignore, though.
Maybe it was in the past (10+ km from nearest anything else I know of), but it is now just 1400 nodes north of new Crystal Lake catapult destination.
Anything more than ~200 blocks in the sky is usually unnoticeable due to distance at which the server is willing to send you blocks (if you set view range to 500, you will not receive blocks from that far from your current destination). Which is I guess why I did not see the full horizontal extent of this.
Such projects are simply the opposite of big holes.
The Tower of Babel's gotten a few changes
All jokes aside, I'm not sure how I feel about this. While I respect the dedication to building such a huge tower, I think it the floating parts may cause some issues. The biggest issue I can see now is that the tower is extremely close to a fast-travel point.
my thoughts: the time scope of the build is an important factor. let's give it a couple years and see what happens, unless there's a major objection.
@Horus, the rate of completion for your builds is not great, nor is their overall appearance. but i have to admit that the scale of the projects intimidates me - i can't even finish my much smaller projects.
The whole tower is unprotected, so anybody can lend in hand with the project construction or improvement of the appearance ;)
Here's my list of criteria I go through when looking at people's builds:
Is it protected?
Does it have valuable items in it?
Does it have unique items in it?
Does it float either in the air or on the ocean?
Does it have basic artistic value?
Who owns it?
When was this person online last?
Is there something else around?
Does it disturb the landscape?
Anything special about it?
It's a build in progress. It blatantly violates "no floating stuff except stuff that floats" and it takes way too much space in my opinion.
As I explored it, I noticed another small protection near top (6.5km) with afk horus and some machinery in it. Out of that height, maybe 300-400m is non-empty, rest is just connection and long water elevators. I have not explored/seen stuff more than cca 200 blocks from centerline, so there may be more.
Imho the tower is fine with this regard (it takes only small area on land and the part that is visible from below looks relaticely nice). the skybridge that goes north and to lesser extend east and west from it on the ground is ugly and should be somewhat cleaned up or finished/beautified by horus with priority, as that is near crystal lake destination
writing up a more concise response.
