I chose to /bug it in the event this was a glitch. No, I do not think ghosts killed it because the closest unprotected area to the flowercow was over 70 nlocks away. I also heavily suspect it was a player who killed it due to the coords of the location going public in the aftermath of a voice attack.
Log didn't reveal anything about the fate of the flowercow.
if nothing's in the log, then it's hard to tell... some things i've learned:
protection runes only protect mobs against other players if the mob is also in a protected area that the player doesn't have access to. that doesn't apply to this case though, because the only owner on the area was Azelf.
explosions from an electrumese sword projectile bypass protection checks - this very well could have been the cause of death.
