Similar to how when you're idle your stamina can go down to some minimum level that does not cause HP damage, holding ethereal:crystal_gilly_staff in-hand should not allow your air bar to deplete below some minimum level that would cause HP damage. However, you still need to use it actively to get a full air bar.
Also require a few times uses of the staff to fully replenish air bar, not an insane amount maybe 3x from totally out of air in suffocation state, 2x if you've been idle and are at that minimum non-damaging level, and 1x if anything above that minimum non-damaging level.
Normal play and in combat under liquids should not change much if you're paying attention to the air bar you won't notice it much just same 1x click occasionally.
If you're out exploring non-combat just holding the wand a couple of clicks is reasonable before changing what you're doing. If you're suffocating it should require a few clicks (3x).
Optional: add wear to crystal gilly staff. It should wear very slowly when in-hand and being used to maintain that minimum non-damaging air bar level, and more quickly when when being actively used. It should not wear when in-hand and above the minimum non-damaging air bar level and not otherwise being actively used.
i like these suggestions, but am neutral on the main suggestion - that your breath lasts forever if you hold the staff.
Such a mechanic could be used for similar stuff as well: Builders flight could become a tool that ticks down the wear in a 5 minute interval, so could the gilly staff.
@niceride What's the usecase? Do you want to idle in lava or similar?
Respond to a message in chat without dying, is one. This is a social game.
you need to type faster ;)
Or respond later. When fighting balrog, he won't wait with killing you until you finish your chat ;)
for idling in lava, just place two ladders to create a temporary air pocket.
I think this change would make underwater or in-lava combat quite harder.
Overall the gilly staff as it is does not match the expectation that a magical staff tool wears and has some kind of beneficial effect while in-hand.
Staff of Light provides some light when in-hand (which is itself anti-mob spawning near the player), it wears and is repairable, and you can type responses in chat while using the light it gives for situational awareness. Imagine for a moment every time you replied in chat your screen was completely dark and you take HP damage when this happens. Few players would bother to type in chat at all. When you are checking "/mail" command or doing some crafting search? Your response is to place some special lights in the world every time you want to communicate?
Related: I would also suggest that staff of light very slowly wear when in-hand if without it there would be darkness below a certain level, but only if it is reasonable in code (and computing resources) to do so.
If you are suffocating already and then select gilly staff in-hand, I think you should have to click at least once to replenish air bar. This is a detail I'm less certain about, if having it in-hand should replenish the air bar up to that minimum non-damaging amount or if having it in-hand should just prevent going below that. Is one of those less likely to have buggy behavior with lag, then it should be whatever is intuitive on touch devices for this situation.
I don't think staff of light should be worn by merely holding it. If you hold block of glow glass or torch, it also don't wear these items.
