someone was strip-mining, looking for rainbow ore. this is part of a very old area of the map, in which rainbow ore is much more common, and someone was methodically looking for it by excavating every third node in the x dimension, which is reasonably efficient.
i'm not entirely sure what is to be done about this - i could fill in the air w/ stone via worldedit, and then make sure the helevator is still open?

Yes please - it's just ravaged with this technique - it's a valid enough mine technique, there are others that are dangerous - there are natural cliffs that are dangerous - IDK it's just so close to helli - you practically step off the helli and you're going to die within a few seconds.
filled it in, and made sure the helevator was still open. intersecting caves may have been filled in as well, an unfortunate but necessary side effect.
