Not letting me eat gapples when I need it - its a balrog, sure, but I was still able to eat them even when burning

balrogs don't block you from eating gapples on their own.

fighting a balrog should almost always be certain death. i wrote the code and i know how to fight them, but i still only have a 50/50 chance of defeating them.
