I looked over it in singleplayer and found out this is no bug at all...
The slate drops darkage:slate_cobble when mined. This drop is burned to slate. Cooking slate to schist would be the next step, which can obviously not be done by the lava pick.
Since in almost all cases the stones either become cobble or can be further processed by melting, I did not consider this option....
