this does seem to be the case, but doesn't happen when i use a recent version of minetest_game (5.4.1 or HEAD). probably, the fix is to just update minetest_game. if that can't be done, updating the furnace code would probably be enough.

this is fixed in minetest_game, but the behavior is overridden and re-broken by pipeworks. if we aren't already using it, we should switch to https://github.com/mt-mods/pipeworks which is actively maintained.
