Idea: Town Marketplace #4381

Currently, if you want to open a shop in a city, you have to obtain a plot (20x20 place) and then build a reasonably looking house there and then a shop in it.

If you are selling only few items (i.e. those few that you or your factory can produce/find/craft efficiently), the need to build a house does present an overhead, plus in some cities (like Haven), getting a free plot is not exactly easy :)

I propose a way this could be solved by building a marketplace with stands.

An example how it can look like is in the screenshot. It shows an example with two stands (you can go to the coords in the screenshot if you want to see it live :)

Individual stand does take 4x3 or 4x4 nodes or similar area, based on how they are configured or spaced apart (you need some walkway between), allowing to put around 20-30 stands in place that would be needed for a single plot.

The stands could be built and rented/given out (exact rules based on city decision) by city mayor - if the stands are pre-built, the shop owner would be granted just the 2x3 area for the smartshops, he would need to stick in own 6 smartshops, load the goods to sell, set prices and that's it - new shop is ready for customers.

Some tweaks to the design can be done as necessary (different style, adding place for smartshop storage, etc ...)

I suggest trying this idea in Haven (some free space may be available near the open-air art gallery?) and if it would be successful, other cities then can simply copy it, as it does not need any mods or anything not available on the server already :)

Every city may decide on the size of their plots. They may even have different sized ones or none at all. Entirely up to them. If they hand out plots in a 4x4x4 shape and size, and another bunch in 15x50x15, that covers your usecase, right?

Yes, every city can give plots as they please ... what I suggest is to try this type of plots in Haven ... as you are the ruler of that town, it would be up to you if you try this or not and under what conditions.

I believe it can make economy more live and trading more easier for lot of people.

i'd prefer to set up a dedicated area not in haven w/ such a setup of shops. i curated three such spaces on blocky survival. at least one of them was hugely popular.

the idea was to provide a good "one-stop" shop which was worth visiting. the other goal was to reduce FPS lag by limiting the number of shops/signs/etc a player could set up, to reduce limit density of entities. areas that allowed for a high density of freeform shops and signs tended to have terrible FPS issues, similarly to the merchants' quarter of haven.

If the skeleton of the stand would be provided by the city and player would have rented only 6 core nodes for shop, they would be able to place only 6 smartshops ... or perhaps five + 1 sign. Not exactly free-form... A mall could be also option, but would not fit theme.

Shop density would be comparable to normal shop with many items in usual plot, just various parts would have different owners

The NPC are also able to act as traders. You can see one such dressed in a bunny costume standing on my plot in Haven.

They're mobs and ought to produce alltogether less lag than many smartshops.

My town hall in Maravillosa has little corners as trading booths for those future NPC.

Tenebris and probably other towns have decorative market stalls which could also be a home for NPC.

sixer simply has to inspire a mayor with his idea. In addition, there is already a marketplace without a city on the north side of the bay of Haven. Here, too, players have teamed up for this.

NPCs may be usable, but has disadvantage that you need to interact with them to see what they offer.

If the idea to set up marketplace in Haven won't pass (not sure how serious would be performance issues from adding some smartshops, but the place could be quite popular), I'll check the north Haven, maybe I can rent some shop space there :)
