this is absolutely an engine bug and may or may not have anything to do w/ the vex or the silkworm

This didn't show for 3 month. It wasn't positively solved, but until it reappears, we can close, unless @flux has other ideas? Reporting such stuff upstream without 100% repro so far was pretty unsuccessful.
