Yes, the mushroom biome is really the most boring ever. The floor is said to be made of mycelium, hence the purple color, but it is much too garish. The mushrooms are far too uniform and unrealistic. The whole thing looks sterile.

What can be done? The local Pumba should be found much more often. So far, it is very rare and only a fraction of the players will ever have seen one. And if there may be warthogs in the mushroom biome, why not the already known frogs? I could also imagine (not so) Large Slugs https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?t=27325 there.

Not only the wildlife should be revived. Instead of just the giant mushrooms and their little siblings, there could also be a medium variant, as @flux suggests. Mosses and ferns should be allowed to grow there. So that players like to settle there, how nice that would be?

i love the idea of large slugs, but i fear anything that uses ABMs. then again, we currently have 91 ABMs running which aren't implicated in major lag issues?

also the "medium" mushroom will now spawn in new mushroom biomes.

pumba is already supposed to spawn in mushroom biomes: https://notabug.org/TenPlus1/mobs_animal/src/master/warthog.lua#L70-L81

perhaps the spawn_by requirement restricts their spawning too much?

note to self: test whether removing the spawn_by requirement increases their spawn rate

lastly, i'm highly in favor of adding moss/fern spawning to the mushroom biomes. i do wish someone would create a better "mushroom dirt" texture, which shows grass interspersed w/ white mycelia.
