I find the gates we have quite limiting and it is hard to make some more creative gates with the sticky pistons and digiline pistons, so I suggest this mod: https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?t=9897
With that you can place a gate node and then create a scheme, that is activated when the gate is turned on and another scheme that is activated when turning it off.
As far as I can tell as admins you can set limits for how big these can actually get. Also best would be to have it behind the mesemaker priv, I think.
Another good thing is (according to a friend that told me about the mod) this can't be used for cheating by constantly activating a gate and removing a node, because by removing a node it automatically safes that in the new scheme, so that upon next activation the node will be gone and can't be dug again.
looks neat, but it was last updated in 2017 and would need some TLC before it'd be ready for use. it seems to be designed as a creative single-player item, there's lots of potential problems w/ it (e.g. it doesn't seem to have any constraints on who can set them up, it doesn't check for protection, etc.).
on the other hand, it's much less laggy than castle_gates.
Yes, definitely less laggy than castle gates. I've seen it beeing used on another server. It allows more creativity when building gates.
