hm. i mostly like this, though you can already get dark gray dye from scorched wood, and you can use dark-gray dye to make most of the things you can make w/ black dye, outside of black-stained furniture or glass.
coal is far from a scarce resource. what need is there for an easier way to get black dye?
We also have black tulips that give black dye
However you can't mass produce (they are very slow and max make 3 only) unless you have flower cow (but it produces other non-wanted items too). Trust me I tried. I too was looking to mass produce black dye without using coal.
I use both dark grey and black dye, there are look different when making stone bricks. (ref my castle in Aramore City)
they produce infinitely, though they'll stop producing if the density gets too high. it's easy enough to set up a large set of parallel flower farms to mass produced them. attached is a picture of my enormous flower auto-farm on tunnelers' abyss. all the required machinery is present on your-land.
the flower cow has already been set back to only producing flowers and grass (#3046). it is unlikely that a separate fix to add a new crafting recipe will be deployed before that update.
BTW, it would be nice to use charcoal for torches too.
i see that as non-controversial and am kind of surprised that's not already possible.
you already can?
You are right, I was wrong. I often talk to newbies to craft some torches before going in the mine. But, I had some missing receipe in my mind: You can't craft gun powder out of charcoal.
In ancient Rome, the senators wore purpure (a colour between crimson and magenta). It was the colour of nobility, only the rich could afford it. Why? Because it was terribly hard to obtain.
Imagine now some adventurer put in a LOT of effort/wealth to obtain a rare colour and then we made it suddenly cheaper.
I'm ok with the fact that various colours have various difficulties.
not everything that's hard to obtain is valuable. tyrian purple (and a number of other early dyes) look incredibly distinctive compared to the other permanent dyes out there at the time, mainly greens and yellows and browns. being hard to obtain was part of the story, but there was more to the story.
on your-land, pretty much every color is currently trivial to create. we've even got the whole range of unified_dyes present, which are incredibly inscrutable to obtain and even harder to use, because they don't work w/ almost anything. but they're all cheap because all the basic dyes are cheap.
do we really want to introduce a system where some dyes are hard to come by? i'm a fan of creating value artificially, but i feel like some players would riot.
my unified dyes tutorial on blocky survival (ignores the purely greyscale dyes)

Note: Level of difficulty is based on crafting dyes from nature instead of mixing dyes.
Unless good reasons surface, I'd like to keep it the way it is and not have renewable black dye.
