the skins are intentionally limited, though there's a process to add new ones.

i like the idea of clothes, i'm surprised it hasn't been suggested before (or i just can't find it). however, it can create problems by masking a player's armor.

also it probably doesn't work great w/ all the other things which modify the player model.

I think I found a better mod for this issue,

Painted 3D Armor
Adds banners to your armor, either painted using the painting mod or created using the banners mod

being able to tag your armor w/ your city/clan crest sounds pretty awesome, though allowing people to create an arbitrary crest (potentially offensive), not as much. great possible feature, but it'll be tricky to get it right.

afaik some of those use a different player model and/or are incompatible with 3d armor for example

To be honest I'm unhappy with the current 3d model of minetest. We need a basic, but extendable model that doesn't have those odd "skin changes when werewolf" or "you look like a yellow splortch when wielding pickled carrots.

If people can make themselves skins, they may try to gain advantages by using invisble pixels, create eyesores with pure neon or any other variety. Also, we might be held liable when people create offensive skins like ... uh ... you can imagine ;)

That's why unfortunately we cannot allow importing any skin without supervision.

i'll probably get around to fixing the player model stuff and making it extensible whenever i get around to rewriting the armor mod.

"extensible" might require running a command-line script to generate a model compatible w/ all the integrated mods, but at least it'll be do-able.

I have an idea, what if we make a toggle switch on Inventory menu where player can show/hide armor (but armor attributes are not disabled when hidden). Players can show their skins without un-equiping the armor and without losing protection of (hidden)armor.

Customizing your own shield or other armor parts by adding a texture overlay sounds like a good idea. After all the skin of the player is rarely visible. There are usually hostile mobs like mimes around - we barely go naked.

We might use existing textures for that purpose.

The "Edit Skins" mod looks promising - though less for players but more for NPC. We have plenty of textures for them, but somehow still not enough...they need more individuality.
