this might not be a bug but an unfortunate mechanic that we might have to change.
If you harvest a vine like that, you will get a vines:vines back that is not placeable in the world. This leads to confusion regularly but is not a bug per se.

Sent this in a message to lazer, too, and asked for the type of vines he got back.

Yes, he indeed got the not placeable vines:vines.
This reminds me of #1103 - shears would be the item to get placeable vines back, but it's buggy right now. Need to fix.

And I wonder whether better documentation on vines would help here.

Also the other half of the main problem persists - lazer could take vines in a protected room. Do vines not mind protection at all?
