I think the current nether mod comes with a new biome but I must admit, I find it quite scary... :')
How about making it where you get xp for placing them rather than digging them ?

I don't really think we have use for that. It is fairly easy to get your hands on gold. You can go mining, you can kill some Oerkkis in the Arena, sell stuff, buy gold or get some through killing…

The fire in the arena makes it possible to see so much better at night, I actually lure stuff to the center just to get the fire, so I'd miss that a lot.
